What is jailbreaking?
There seems to be some confusion about what jailbreaking is. Jailbreaking (sometimes called rooting) has traditionally been when you gain administrative access to a system through exploits or custom firmware. This allows you to bypass restrictions and install software that is usually not allowed on a particular device.
Unless you want to change the look and feel or core functionality of your Amazon Fire TV or Firestick, you don’t need to root it. Instead, we’re looking for a way to bypass the App Store and install apps from unknown sources. This process is known as sideloading, and it can significantly improve the versatility of your Fire TV device without the risk of it accidentally becoming unusable.
How to jailbreak your Firestick or Fire TV
Step 1: Initial setup jailbreak a firestick
Before getting started, we need to notify the Firestick to allow apps to be installed from unknown sources. It’s straightforward to do: navigate to the Settings menu and click on Device.
From here, go into Developer Options and enable the Apps from Unknown Sources option. While many other online guides ask you to enable ADB debugging here, it is only necessary if you want to take screenshots of your Fire TV or Firestick.
Step 2: Install the Downloader App jailbreak a firestick
An app is available on the Amazon Fire Store that allows you to download files directly from the Internet without using standard browsers. It’s called Downloader, and it’s used to get. APK files (the Android equivalent of . EXE files on a PC or . APP on a Mac).
To find this app, press and hold the microphone button on the remote control and say “Downloader.” you should be taken right there. If your remote doesn’t include voice search, you can press left on the home screen and type “Downloader” (without the quotes) instead.
Now press the middle button to bring up the app’s installation page and hit download.
Step 3: Use the Downloader to install apps from unknown sources
Once the Downloader is installed, open it up. We will show how easy it is to bypass the App Store by installing an app that isn’t available by default: Kodi.
An address bar will appear with “http: //” already entered. Add “kodi.tv/download” (without the quotes) and click the Go button in the lower right corner of the keyboard.
The Kodi website will open. Click on the Android icon here and select the 32-bit version on the following screen.
Kodi will start downloading. Once the process is complete, you will be asked to approve the permissions. If you’re ok with this, click Install in the lower right corner. You can then open it right after installation if you want.
You can’t just install Kodi. Any APK file hosted online is fair game. However, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, Amazon Firesticks and Fire TVs use a 32-bit architecture so that 64-bit applications won’t work.
Second, you need to make sure that you are only downloading from reputable sources. Hundreds of websites repackage existing. APK files with their adware or malware. A recent study found that 86% of more than 1,200.APKs tested that contained malware was considered legitimate versions of existing apps. Suppose the app creator doesn’t allow you to download the. APK files directly from their website. You might find a verified, legitimate and legal version hosted on APKMirror.com.

For example, let’s say you’re developing an Android app and want to know if it will work on Amazon Fire TV devices. It is usually recommended to install the Android Software Development Kit (SDK) and the Android Debug Bridge (ADB) on your PC.
There are several problems with this approach. First, installing and configuring the Android developer tools is a complicated process that is well beyond the comfort zone of an inexperienced user. Second, this approach requires two screens. This means that if you need to use the other Device, you will likely have to move from room to room.
There is a far easier way to access these apps on your Firestick. First, install an app called ES File Explorer on your Fire TV device. Although this app can be tricky to navigate, the next step will take us straight to the file so this won’t be a problem.
Upload your app’s .APK file to your Dropbox account. This is a free cloud storage service and it only takes a few minutes to register. Once you’re signed in and your file has been uploaded, click Share Folder on the right and select Can View from the drop-down menu. Then click the Copy Link option button to see exactly what URL to enter into the downloader app.
